Listen Up Let Me Tell You a Story!
So I went to see Six the Musical in Las Vegas at the end of April! I hecking love this musical and have been listening to their songs on repeat for the past couple years. After this experience I decided to draw character turnarounds of each of the main cast members. This is so I could eventually use them for animatics. I not only wanted to use them for storyboard practice, but it was my way of celebrating and appreciating the show in its entirety. Six is phenomenal in multiple aspects. This includes their diverse cast, fire songs, and message of women empowerment.
Don't worry, I was not contagious during this cough, as this was post- viral. But I think the person next to me would've appreciated if I wore a mask "owo I got one afterwards tho. |
To summarize, Six is a historical musical about the six wives of King Henry VIII, who form a pop group together. Initially, they begin a competition on who’s had it worse with Henry (because he was an awful tw*t). They explain their trials in ✨song form✨, which are all absolute bops!! In the end though, they realize that competing with each other is an unhealthy comparative act. They should not be defined by this lame king. Instead, they should define themselves as they are, empower each other, and reclaim their place in history (or HERstory).
One thing I absolutely love about Six the Musical is that each character is so distinctive. The cast is diversified by different races, body types, and age, etc. And it’s cool how Six does not pigeonhole one character to a specific image. Currently, there are multiple casts around the world and no two look the same. Thank you Six for communicating that all of us can see ourselves in these queens.
Another thing making the characters so distinctive is their costumes. OH MY GAHH THEIR COSTUMES. I could read a whole book on the thoughts that went into each and every one.
Gabriella Slade, the costume designer said, “I wanted to create a strong and vibrant silhouette and textile for each queen so they could each have their own identity but with recognisable historical detailing.”
Strong silhouette?? That sounds a lot like uh, character designing! Is the fact that they were so drawable the reason I started this project? Probably. Actually, yes.
I thought this would be a good way to practice my storyboarding while also enjoying something I love.
Uh, I don't know how to end this. I’ll talk about Catherine of Aragon next!
Plz enjoy sketches of random people I saw in Vegas! (Everyone's so fashionable there)
